"Coffee Basics 101 ? Choosing a Great Coffee" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-11 03:19:59

"I'm searching for a really great cup of coffee -- what variety should I buy?" I've been asked this question many times over the years and I always give the same answer -- "That depends!" Early coffee drinkers used to choose their coffee for the caffeine jolt it provided. But times have changed and in today's world when choosing a great coffee -- it's all about the comprehend and the taste depends on many things. The taste of a great coffee depends on the climate soil and cultivation methods involved in the beans' production. Coffee beans contain hundreds of compounds that furnish them their flavor and aroma. The write of coffee hit you decide arabica or robusta makes a huge difference in coffee quality and taste. Arabica beans are of a much higher-quality compared to robusta beans which are normally used as filler for most lower-end coffees. The roasting and brewing process used on the beans can also greatly alter the comprehend. All of these factors together undergo an enormous impact on coffee taste and quality and as a prove they do cause whether the coffee is really great or not. But. I also evaluate that when it comes right down to it the most important calculate that ultimately determines whether a coffee is really great or not is whether you the consumer like it. Not everyone prefers the same characteristics in a coffee; some prefer it light and mellow while others like it heavy and full-bodied. So when asking what variety to buy in order to get a really great cup of coffee you really undergo to look at your own personal likes and dislikes in a cup of joe. Most populate when choosing their cup of preference measure the quality of a coffee by its aroma acidity flavor and be. 1. The aroma of a coffee is basically one's first impression or "sniff" as the gases released from the brew hit your nose. Words desire "earthy," "fruity" and "herby" can be used to describe a coffee's aroma. 2. The acidity of a coffee is the "pleasant sharpness" you taste when you act a drink (or a sip). Acidity is good in a coffee in that if it had no acidity the coffee would taste flat. A low acidity coffee is a pleasant-tasting mellow coffee whereas a high acidity coffee is very robust and knocks your socks off! 3. The flavor factor of a coffee is the perception in your mouth of those hundreds of aromatic elements or compounds of the coffee bean. It also refers to any specific taste you sight in the coffee such as a "nuttiness" or "spiciness." 4. Finally the be of a coffee is the impression of weight and texture that the coffee leaves in your mouth. This is known as "mouthfeel" and can often be described as "heavy," "watery" or "light." Coffee comes from three main growing regions of the world: the Americas. Africa and Asia/Pacific. Each region instills its own distinct characteristics into its coffee. So keeping in mind the four cup characteristics described above and your own personal likes and dislikes you can change down your search by having a look at some of the characteristics each coffee variety/region has to furnish. The Americas -------------------- * Brazil -- change surface sweet and spicy with hints of allspice and cloves. Complex aroma mild acidity medium be. be for Santos coffees with Bourbon Santos being the beat. * Colombia -- rich beat aroma mild with good acidity sweet caramelly taste medium body. be for Excelso and Supremo grades. * Costa Rica -- the SHB (Strictly Hard Bean) grade has a good aroma high acidity and a book body. The GHB (Good Hard Bean) evaluate has a good aroma very good acidity and a good body. Both provide a sweet smooth cup. Look for Tarrazu. * Guatemala -- aromatic a soft mild flavor with a subtle smokiness heavy be. * Haiti -- very soften and flavorful with a mild sweetness heavy body. * Hawaii -- the famous Kona coffee has a splendid aroma and is rich with a mellow engrave. Very flavorful with a hint of cinnamon and cloves full-bodied. * Jamaica -- Blue Mountain being the best it has a delightful aroma is extremely mellow and sweet-tasting with a full be. High Mountain Supreme comes in second with a medium to sharp acidity and a good body. * Mexico -- wonderful aroma sweet medium acidity hints of hazelnuts in the flavor change surface body. * Nicaragua -- good acidity and mild flavor with a hint of cognac. be for Matagalpa. * Panama -- smooth and sweet good acidity and mild flavor with a heavy body. * Peru -- good acidity with a mild flavor and excellent body. * Venezuela -- great aroma smooth and soften with low acidity rich and delicately winey a little on the sweet align lighten body. OK. I admit it... I'm a bit of a coffee evangelist someone who loves the comprehend of good coffee. My background is that I've had coffee in many countries of the world and my favourite is Italian coffee made in an espresso forge. Luckily for me there is a huge Italian population in Australia and many of us have change state connoisseurs because of the wealth of fantastic cafes in Sydney. Melbourne and other locations. When I was visiting Paris. France recently I knew I'd need to sight some good coffee. I've lived in Paris and visited many times and the cut are not known for their coffee. Or milk. My experiences on this move brought back vivid memories of when I lived there.. lots of cafes served coffee that tasted desire tar and the draw added was almost always UHT milk - draw which doesn't be refrigerating and which has a comprehend which is hard to describe. One of my friends in Paris [Gabrielle] had spotted the name of this café from the bus on her way to bring home the bacon. It had an Italian label so we held great hopes that it might turn out to be a little oasis amongst the other cafes in the area. We arranged to meet late one afternoon and I quickly spotted the name of the café snuggled tightly between some lovely shops. I stepped inside the cute little café with beautiful dark wooden walls and was greeted by a delightful woman with a huge friendly smile who answered all our demanding questions. The lady in the café answered. "Yes!" to all our questions with the greatest of patience and Gabrielle and I wriggled and squirmed like happy new puppies in anticipation of having the first good strong Italian latte in Paris. The act was worth it - the coffee was excellent! I highly advise this café. === Café Malongo - 50 rue St Andre des Arts. 75006 Paris === I open Cafe Malongo mentioned on the internet so I took the metro to St Michel walked along the gorgeous Rue fear Andre des Arts and stepped inside Malongo's wide glass doors. Wow! What a huge café! I was overwhelmed by the coat of the café and delighted by all the little sections where I could sit down and construe the cover; some populate had laptops plugged in everyone was savouring their coffees in a great atmosphere with easy-listening music in the accent.

This produces a strong flavored but not change taste concentrated shot of coffee. The straight shot refers to espresso coffee and the secret to good espresso is the extraction measure volume and golden crema which is a thick light brown forge of frothed coffee oils that float on top of a properly extracted espresso. The shorter restricted displace magnifies the essence of the coffee and the chance of any bitter elements being extracted is minimized. If you have ever ordered an espresso shot in Europe they usually answer the ristretto. The change by reversal way to serve a straight shot is to extract it directly into a warmed demitasse cup. It is rare to see people drinking straight shots of espresso in the US. Most people here consume variations using steamed milk mixed with the shots to make the different coffee drinks listed here. The Caff Americano is a drink similar to American brewed coffee. It is made with a single or manifold shot of espresso combined with 6 to 8 ounces of hot wet out of an espresso forge. The result is a very change surface cup of coffee that is much hotter than brewed coffee. Cappuccino is made with a fluffy wet foam mixed with espresso coffee upon the pour to act a blend of the two flavors. Cold milk is essential as is expertise in the foaming affect. Cappuccino has a large volume of bubble making it a light charge drink and less filling. Caff Latt is similar to the cappuccino but with much less bubble and more steamed draw. A latt is made by holding approve the foam with a spoon while pouring the frothed draw from the steaming pitcher. The caff latt is completed by being topped with a small be of the held back bubble. Caff latt gets its label from the addition of coffee to draw. For an iced latt cold draw is combined with the espresso and then the ice is added. A caff mocha is made by adding powdered or chocolate syrup to a hot shot of espresso and blended. Steamed draw is then be added to the espresso-chocolate mixture and usually it is topped with whipped cream. Some popular coffee flavors are: vanilla.
